Galveston Jewish Cemetery Wandering Among The Beautiful Tombstones

Last weekend we took a trip down to Galveston. Since we are packing up to move to Minnesota in next couple of weeks it may be our last trip for awhile.

I love the water, watching people fish in the Gulf of Mexico, eating at the eateries and most of all visiting the cemetery.

This is the best cemetery ever. Not just one but several different ones in a block or two area. We skipped church and went on Sunday so I was able to visit the Jewish cemetery for the first time.

I could spend weeks just taking pictures among the tombstones in Galveston.

Wandering Graveyard Rabbit Finds Routt Point Cemetery in Texas

Recently I asked hubby if he wanted to go for a ride into the country side outside of Richmond which is outside of Houston, Texas. He grabs his book as I grab my camera. I was on the errand to find Snake Creek Cemetery of Needville Texas. I had requests for pictures of graves from http://www.findagrave.com/

Along with my camera I have map quest directions. On the road to Snake Creek Cemetery we come across this old sad cemetery. In the middle of the country side is Routt Point Cemetery. I spotted two guys working on a tractor so we pulled over to ask if we were on the right road to Snake Creek Cemetery . They had never heard of the cemetery I was looking for. The only other old cemetery on the road they told me had not been taken care of for over 20 years and they encourage me to not visit... Rattlesnakes....

Well since I am a good old graveyard rabbit, I do what comes naturally. I pulls out my camera and takes pictures of what is in front of me.

This is Routte Point Cemetery outside of Needville, Texas. It is small and an old poor cemetery. The stones are small and some are even home made. But it is being taken care of and for that I am happy. Camera in hand and watching out for RATTLESNAKES .. grass is cut thank God.

This tombstone was placed in honor for Captain William S Fisher by the State of Texas 1936.

Born in Virginia Captain of a Company at San Jacinto 1836 and in command of the Mier expedition 1842. Died in Galveston 1845.

At the top of the grave is a gate door open

this grave stone has broken off its pedastal and is just laying on the ground. With nothing by initials hard to identify who this person was.

A Graveyard Rabbits Wanderings in Texas

I had a request to take pictures in a small cemetery in Wallis Texas. Promising hubby lunch after off, we drive to Wallis. This would only be about 26 miles away. Wallis is out in the country, nothing but land and cows and of course road construction. Finally before I knew it we came to a road called Cemetery Road. Over the rail road tracks, pass some yards with trailers and old tires and we soon come to a small country cemetery among the trees.

I had a request to find 17 graves, some were thought to maybe be in what would of been called the black section of the cemetery. Sadly I found none of these names. It is a small cemetery and after walking among the gravestones 4 times I knew they are not there. I contacted the requester and suggested searching for another cemetery in the area.

I was able to find the others.

They were at the back of the cemetery and all together. So with camera in hand I was able to full fill someone's wish. Even finding family they did not have names for.

So tonight we are remembering the Parr family. All buried near each other in this quiet country cemetery in Wallis Texas. And hoping some day to find the graves of another family and making more wishes coming true.

I found Sterling in the 1870 Census in Brazonia county at http://www.ancestry.com/ . Value of Real Estate was $30,000 and personal property was $4750.

He was living with Sugar Turner 70 year old male who managed his farm. Also living with them was 2 young men also named Turner.

The census was taken June 19,1870 and Sterling passed away August 27th at the age of 27 years old.

With Hennie we have no dates, but she had to have died before or the same time as Hallie since he is resting next to her. Sad to see that Hallie was only 28 years old when he passed away.
